Engine overview
What you need to know.
The BMW B58 is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six introduced in 2015 as the successor to the N55. It powers the BMW M340i, M440i, 540i, X3 M40i, Z4 M40i, and the Toyota GR Supra A90 — a collaboration that doubled the B58 tuning community overnight.

The B58 addressed every major weakness of the N54 and N55. Closed-deck block — stronger than the open-deck N55. Integrated water-to-air intercooler. 350-bar fuel injection. Forged crankshaft and connecting rods — stock internals hold 500+whp on well-maintained builds.

The B58 earns an 8.6/10 reliability score among enthusiasts — on par with legendary engines like the Toyota 2JZ when properly maintained. No wastegate rattle. No HPFP epidemic. No injector failures at 20,000 miles. This is what BMW learned from a decade of N54 and N55 ownership feedback.

Oil Leaks — Valve Cover & Oil Cooler Gasket
ModerateDevelops with age · Not catastrophic
The B58 is far more reliable than the N54 and N55 but still develops oil leaks over time. Valve cover gasket and oil cooler gasket are most common. Not urgent but do not ignore — a small leak becomes a big leak.

Coolant Loss — Hoses and Expansion Tank
ModerateEarly B58 more prone
Some early B58 owners experienced coolant loss from hoses and the expansion tank. Far less severe than older BMW engines. Check coolant monthly and inspect hoses at every oil change.

VANOS Solenoid Service
Moderate60–100k · Clean screens first
Shares the VANOS solenoid issue with N54 and N55. Filter screens clog with oil sludge causing rough idle and low-end power loss. Pull solenoids and clean screens with CRC MAF cleaner — free fix 70% of the time.

Spark Plugs — More Frequent on Tuned Cars
Moderate40–60k stock · 25–30k tuned
No dramatic ignition failures like the N54 — but tuned cars burn through plugs faster. On Stage 2+ builds, replace every 25–30k miles. Use 1-step colder plugs on modified cars.
